BREAKING: APC fixes new date for National Convention

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that it will be holding its National Convention on March 26, 2022.

Newsflash Nigeria reports that the announcement of the new date for the much-anticipated event has overruled its earlier decision to postpone its national convention indefinitely.

It is understood that the new date for the convention was the date earlier slated for the conduct of its zonal congresses across the country.

The party stated that it will begin activities leading to the convention with the conduct of zonal congresses from February 24.

Earlier, it was reported that the ruling party had announced the postponement of the convention slated for Saturday, February 26.

This is as the party has notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that instead of its National Convention, it will be holding zonal congresses first.

The letter to that effect, dated Monday, February 21, 2022, and jointly signed by the chairman of the Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Governor Mai Mala Buni, and Secretary of the committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe was addressed to the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

APC noted in the letter seen by our correspondent that Monday’s notice supersedes its earlier notice to INEC about the conduct of a National Convention.

It urged the electoral body to send representatives to monitor its zonal congress scheduled to hold on March 26, 2022.

But the ruling party reversed its earlier decision to hold zonal congresses of the party on March 26.

The Governor Mai Buni-led convention planning committee, had Monday afternoon, written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announcing that the party would not go ahead with the planned national convention of February 26.

The party leadership had held a series of meetings behind close-door since 11 am on Monday.

Announcing the new development to newsmen after the closed-door meeting, National Secretary of the party, John James Akpanudoedehe, said the preparation for the national convention will commence on 24 of March 2022, while the zonal congresses will hold before the national convention slated for 26 of March 2022.

“After deliberation and agreement with the CECPC, we have agreed and approved that the activities of the National Convention will commence from Feb. 24 and terminate on March 26, at Eagle Square with the National Convention.

“In between the convention, we have agreed to have zonal congresses,” the APC scribe said.

He also announced the release of timetables and schedule of activities for the party’s zonal congresses across the 6 geopolitical zones of the country, “pursuant to Article 12.6 of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Constitution.”

According to the new guidelines, the party would publish the zonal committee’s list on Thursday, February 24, 2022, while a meeting of zonal stakeholders holds on Saturday, February 26, 2022.

The party will commence the sales of nomination forms for zonal positions from Monday, February 28 to Thursday, March 3, 2022, and conduct screening for zonal aspirants on Saturday, March 5, 2022.

On Sunday, March 6, 2022, the Screening Appeal will sit and the party will adopt the screening report on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

The APC scribe added that the Zonal Congresses would hold across the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria on Saturday, March 12, 2022; appeals emanating from the congresses would be entertained on Monday, March 14, 2022; while Wednesday, March 16, 2022, would be for the adoption of appeal report.
