Ekiti 2022: Uncertainty over Segun Oni’s bid for SDP ticket
There is uncertainty over the quest by former Governor of Ekiti State, Engr Segun Oni, to contest the June 18 governorship election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Engr Oludele Bankole, whose name was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to have any discussion with him (Oni) as to whether or not to withdraw, a source confided in our correspondent on Sunday.
Oni, who came second with 330 votes in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election of January 26, 2022, surprised many political pundits when he announced that he was dumping the PDP, despite that he had earlier congratulated Otunba Bisi Kolawole, who won the primary.
After days of speculation, Oni announced on a live radio interview on Wednesday, that he has joined SDP and will be the party’s guber candidate.
A few hours later, it was also made public that he will be running with a former All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives aspirant from Ado Ekiti, Mr Ladi Owolabi.
However, three days after Oni made his new political destination public, it was gathered that it was yet to be certain that he will pick the SDP ticket.
The source disclosed to our reporter that Oni did not have any discussion with the SDP candidate, Engr Bankole and the Dr Dele Ekunola-led State Exco of the party.
The source said the former governor only met with leaders of the party in Abuja, ignoring those in Ekiti, including the person whose name is in INEC as the governorship candidate.
“The party leaders in Ekiti are angry. They are feeling ignored and Oni’s chance of picking the party ticket might be heading towards the rocks.
“As of today, those in Ekiti, including the candidate are still waiting for him to discuss with them and if he does not, he is most unlikely to get the ticket,” the source said.
