Trailer Crushes FRSC Officer to Death in Lagos While Allegedly Collecting Bribe

A tragic incident occurred in Lagos State on Friday, when a trailer ran over an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who was trying to stop the vehicle for a stop-and-search operation.

Witnesses said the FRSC officer was attempting to collect a bribe from the driver, who refused to comply and sped off.

The incident happened at Orile Agege bus stop, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

A video of the scene, which was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by some users, showed the mangled body of the FRSC officer lying on the road, while his colleagues and other road users looked on in shock and horror.

One of the users, Nwa, who posted the video, wrote: “FRSC Officer’s squeezed to death by a trailer in an attempt to stop an oncoming lorry at Orile bus/stop Axis of Lagos State.”

Another user, Bishop, who also shared the video, wrote: “Watch how this Lagos FRSC officer lost his life by a trailer in Orile Agege cos of 100 naira bribe. Too sad things like this still happen in Tinubu Lagos.”

The identity of the deceased officer and the driver of the trailer have not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report. SaharaReproters tried to contact the state police spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, for comments, but his phone number was unreachable.

This is not the first time that an FRSC officer has been killed by a trailer in Lagos.

In 2022, a similar incident occurred at Ojota, when a trailer driver crushed an FRSC officer to death while trying to evade arrest.

The FRSC has been accused of extorting money from motorists and commercial drivers through illegal checkpoints and arbitrary fines. Some drivers have also complained of harassment and intimidation by the FRSC officers.

In September 2023, a fatal accident involving a towing van belonging to the FRSC and a Dangote truck resulted in the death of one FRSC officer and critically injured three others in Abuja. The accident occurred at Kugbo-Nyanya Expressway, near Karu Bridge due to mechanical failure.
