Stop Eating Ponmo and Bush Meat – NCDC Warns Nigerians

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has warned Nigerians to stop eating ponmo, bush meat, and dead animals after an anthrax outbreak was confirmed in Niger State.

Anthrax is a severe bacterial disease that can affect both humans and animals. It is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, which can be found in soil, water, and animal products.

The bacteria can enter the body through the skin, lungs, or GI tract. In humans, anthrax can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, anthrax can be fatal.

The NCDC is urging Nigerians to take the following precautions to avoid contracting anthrax:

  • Do not eat ponmo, bush meat, or dead animals.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling animal products.
  • Avoid contact with animals that are sick or injured.
  • If you are bitten by an animal, seek medical attention immediately.

The NCDC is working with state and local health authorities to investigate the anthrax outbreak in Niger State and to implement control measures.
