Release Sowore Now Or Face Jail Term – Court Tells DSS Boss

  • Court has directed the boss of the Department of State Services, DSS to comply with its directive or face grave consequences

The Federal High Court, Abuja, has threatened to jail the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, over his refusal to release pro-democracy campaigner and Publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

In a “notice of disobedience to order of court” issued by the court on Thursday and addressed to the DSS DG, the Federal High Court directed the boss of the secret police to comply with its directive or face grave consequences, which includes “commitment to prison”.

Sowore has remained in detention more than 24 hours after meeting his bail condition as set by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday in a ruling.

He was arrested in Lagos on August 3, 2019 and had been slammed with a seven-count charge bordering on treasonable felony and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.

Meanwhile, Newsflash247 had earlier reported that The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the release of the convener of the #RevolutionNow protest, Omoyele Sowore.

The Federal Government had filed seven counts bordering on treasonable felony and money laundering against Mr Sowore who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters.

After being detained for 45 days, additional charges were filed against him.

But after hearing arguments from both the prosecuting and defence counsels on Tuesday, the trial judge, Justice Taiwo Taiwo ordered the release of Mr Sowore.

He ordered the release on the grounds that there is no order still in court and on the condition that he must deposit all travel documents within 48 hours of the ruling.

The judge also ordered that Sowore’s lawyer, Femi Falana must produce him whenever the court needs him.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo has asked the Department of State Service to release Omoyele Sowore on bail.

The judge, as part of bail conditions, asked Sowore to drop his passport with the court within 48 hours.
