Ogun PDP Guber Candidate Faces Police Probe Over N2 Billion Vote-Buying Scandal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State for the March 18 polls, Ladi Adebutu, may be in more trouble as the Nigeria Police Force has indicted him over a N2 billion vote-buying allegation.

According to Premium Times, the police have submitted a report to the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), recommending further investigation and prosecution of Adebutu.

This online news platform had reported on Tuesday that Adebutu confirmed that he had dragged the AGF, IGP, EFCC, SSS, to court for accusing him of indulging in vote-buying.

However, his spokesperson Afolabi Orekoya denied all allegations against him, saying they were politically motivated and baseless.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Olademeji Yomi, told Premium Times that the police had concluded their investigation and forwarded their report to the relevant authorities.

He said that the case was election-related and it was up to INEC and the AGF to decide how to proceed against Adebutu.

He also said that Adebutu had failed to honour their invitation to respond to the allegation, adding that he had told them through his lawyers that he was receiving medical treatment abroad.

Adebutu was accused of using Verve ATM credit cards branded in the name of his late mother, ‘Dame Caroline Oladunni Adebutu Endowment Scheme,’ to buy votes in all polling booths during the March 18 polls.

He was also reported to have gone on ‘self exile’ after claiming that there were threats on his life for filing a petition to challenge the victory of the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun at the polls.

The police commissioner said that they had interrogated all the necessary suspects involved and the bank Interswitch, except Adebutu.

He said that they were awaiting legal advice from the Federal Director of Prosecutions, who also had their investigative report.

He said that if Adebutu showed up, they would speak to him and update their report.
