Nursing Mother Released from Prison after Allegedly Assaulting Magistrate

A 32-year-old nursing mother, Ann Akpa, who was accused of assaulting a magistrate and disturbing public peace, has regained her freedom after spending three days in the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Ms Akpa was arraigned before a magistrate court on Monday on two counts of assault and breach of peace.

She was alleged to have engaged in a physical altercation with a magistrate, who was also her neighbour, over a domestic issue.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

However, she could not meet the bail conditions until Thursday, when she was released from custody.

Ms Akpa expressed her joy over her release and appealed for the matter to be resolved amicably. She said that she did not intend to fight with the magistrate, but only had a minor quarrel with her.

“It was not a fight but a minor quarrel between the magistrate and I. She has been my neighbour for several years. I don’t want the issue to linger anymore. I just want peace to reign,” she said.

She also asked for forgiveness from the magistrate and the court, saying, “Let us live and forgive one another.”
