Manchester United Appoints Ole Gunnar Solskjaer As The Caretaker Coach

Manchester United appear to have announced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their new caretaker manager on the club website.

A URL links to highlights of United’s 1999 Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich and features the caption ‘Solskjaer becomes our interim manager, 20 seasons after clinching the Treble with that goal at Camp Nou…’

Norwegian prime minister Erna Solberg has also all but confirmed Solskjaer’s status as United’s new interim coach on her Twitter page. Ms Solberg wrote: “Great day for Norwegian football. Good luck keeping control of the Red Devils, @ olegs26_ole.”

Solskjaer is not verified on Twitter nor followed by the official United account, which follows every men’s and women’s player past and present.

The MEN revealed on Tuesday night that United players believe Solskjaer will be appointed as the club’s new caretaker coach. Sources told the MEN United players expected to be informed on Tuesday evening of the Norwegian’s likely appointment after Jose Mourinho was sacked by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward on Tuesday morning.

Solskjaer, 45, has been identified as the ideal interim appointment until United choose their next permanent manager at the end of the season. Although Laurent Blanc’s advisors are whipping up support for the former Paris Saint-Germain coach, sources have told the MEN the Frenchman is not the club’s frontrunner to take caretaker charge.
