Jonathan defects to APC

Barely 24 hours after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost four members of the House of Representatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), another lawmaker, Jonathan Gaza, joined his colleagues to the ruling party.

Gaza was the last PDP member from Nasarawa State in the House of Representatives before he decamped on Wednesday.

The governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, was present to witness his defection.

The governor was at the green chamber, alongside two former governors of the state, Tanko Almakura and Abdulahi Adamu, who are both serving senators.

In a letter read by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, Gaza cited division in the state chapter of the PDP as the reason for decamping.

The Speaker, who was delighted with the defection, could not hide his feeling as he mocked the minority caucus over the latest defection.

“Where is Hon Ndudi Elumelu (the minority leader), is he not going to raise a point of order?” the Speaker asked.

Newsflash Nigeria had reported on Tuesday that the four House of Representatives members from Zamfara state belonging to the PDP, had, resigned their membership of the party and defected to the APC.

The lawmakers are Bello Shinkafi of the Shinkafi/Zurmi Federal Constituency; Ahmed Bakura, Bakura/Maradun; Ahmed Shehu, Bungudu/Maru; and Suleiman Gummi, Gummi/Bukkuyum.

 The four lawmakers blamed the crisis in the PDP for their defection to the APC.

In a letter signed by Suleiman Gumi, the legislators cited the crisis in the Zamafara State chapter of the PDP which led to the dissolution of the state chapter by the national leadership of the party as their reason for defecting to the APC.

This is the fifth member this week to move from the PDP to the APC.

There was no protest from the minority bench, as both the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu and his deputy, Toby Okechukwu, were not available to raise any protest.
