How a Hacker Used Software Codes to Steal Millions of Naira from a Bank

A hacker who allegedly created software codes to defraud First City Monument Bank Plc of N17.8 million has been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kaduna.

The suspect, Michael Anan Onimisi, was brought before Justice Aikawa of the Federal High Court on October 13, 2023, on six counts of internet fraud and money laundering.

According to a statement released by the EFCC on its X page (formerly Twitter) on October 17, 2023, the case was based on a petition from the bank dated June 23, 2023.

The bank claimed that Onimisi had unlawfully accessed their computer system and transferred N17,785,010.75 from their accounts to his own account using two software codes named “Bee-Leaf” and “Real-Eve” that he designed to bypass the bank’s security measures.

Onimisi pleaded not guilty to all the charges when they were read to him in court. The prosecution counsel, N. Salele, asked for a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in a correctional facility pending the trial.

However, the defense counsel, Rabiu Mohammed, filed a bail application for his client and requested the court to grant it. Salele opposed the bail application and asked for more time to respond to it.

Justice Aikawa adjourned the case till October 19, 2023, to rule on the bail application and fixed December 6, 2023, as the date for the commencement of trial. He ordered that Onimisi be kept in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna until then.
