FUOYE Nursing Student Found Dead In Shallow Grave After Night Reading Sparks Outrage

On Monday, September 4, 2023, Atanda Modupe Deborah, a 200-level nursing student of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), went to her faculty for a night reading session. She never came back.

Her roommates raised an alarm when she did not return the next morning. Her friends and classmates joined the search for her, hoping to find her safe and sound. But what they found was horrifying.

Her books and other belongings were floating in a large pond near the faculty building. Her body was buried in a shallow grave behind the faculty, with signs of torture and rape. Her eyes were gouged out, and her head was smashed.

The gruesome discovery sent shockwaves throughout the university community and beyond. How could such a heinous crime happen in a place of learning? Who could have done this to a young and innocent student? What was the motive behind this barbaric act?

The student union body of the school confirmed the tragic death of Deborah in a statement, condemning the incident and demanding justice for her. They also called for increased security measures on campus, especially at night, to prevent such incidents from happening again.

The police have launched an investigation into the case, promising to bring the perpetrators to book. They have also appealed to anyone with useful information to come forward and assist them.

The death of Deborah has sparked outrage and grief among Nigerians, especially on social media. Many have expressed their condolences to her family and friends and called for an end to violence against women and girls in the country.

Deborah was a bright and promising student who had dreams of becoming a nurse. She was loved by many who knew her. She did not deserve to die in such a brutal way. She deserved to live and fulfill her potential.

However, the management of the university has ordered all students to leave the university campuses immediately

In a released statement on Wednesday evening, signed by the Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, instructed all students to leave the university campuses immediately.

The university management also mentioned that armed security personnel have been deployed to enhance patrol, surveillance, and overall security measures.

According to the statement, “The University Management has received a report on the case of Ms Modupe Deborah Atanda who was reported missing as at Wednesday, 6th September 2023; and Management is saddened at the current turn of events.

“It is pertinent to promptly inform the entire University community that immediate steps have been taken in this regard, as all National Security Personnel have been drafted to handle the situation. As a matter of fact, several arrests have been made of suspects.

“To this end, all students (Stream A and any other full-time student still on any of the University’s campuses) are hereby directed to vacate the premises with immediate effect to ensure a proper, holistic and unimpeded thorough investigation, please.

“It is worthy of note that armed security personnel have been quickly deployed for patrol, surveillance and security purposes.

“Rest assured that all steps would be taken by the University to fish out any and all culpable persons; and they shall face the full and unmitigated consequences of their action(s).

“A new resumption date for all students would be conveyed accordingly. We sincerely regret any inconveniences these may have caused. Thank you.”
