FRSC withdraws ‘Egoobala’ (Blood Money) customised number plate

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has withdrawn the customized number plate with the inscription Abuja ‘Egoobala’ following public outcry.

Egoobala, an Igbo word language meaning connotes Blood Money in an English word.

The fancy plate number Egoobala was circulated on social media and Nigerians are attacked FRSC for issuing the number.

But the Federal Road Safety Corps withdrew the number plate, said the agency had known the true meaning of the word “Egoobala” in the Igbo language.

In a statement released by Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, said the Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the number plate.

The Corps Marshal said that the attention of agency has been drawn to the fancy number plate, and noted that ‘Egoobala’ is an Igbo word that connotes blood money.

Oyeyemi assured that the Corps is committed to safer roads and ‘fuller lives.

“The attention of the Federal Road Safety Corps has been drawn to a vehicle seen with a fancy number plate with the inscription ‘Egoobala’, an Igbo word that connotes blood money.

“This is to inform the public that the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has directed the immediate withdrawal of the number plate, having known the true meaning of the word in the Igbo language.

“While assuring the public of the Corps commitment to safer roads, fuller lives, the motoring public should be assured of our commitment to ensure due diligence in all our processes and procedures in keeping with our corporate mandate towards effective service delivery”, he said.

Meanwhile, outrage has continued to trail the approval and issuance of the customized number plate.

Expressing fury over the development a former Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) who prefers anonymous said he suspected some administrative lapses in the number plate approval in the first instance.

The retired ACP questions: “How can someone go ahead and issue this plate number at the office of the FRSC?”

Continuing, he says: “In case you don’t know EGOOBALA means BLOOD MONEY in the Igbo language… Don’t the FRSC have a translator?”
