Bayelsa Saga: See five irregular names caused David Lyon’s sacked

These are the five different names in which Bayelsa Deputy governor- elect, Biobarakuma Degi presented without being legalized that caused the Supreme Court sacked David Lyon as Bayelsa governor-elect.

Recall that, the Supreme Court on Thursday, February 13, sacked David Lyon of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as governor-elect of Bayelsa State, barely 24 hours of his inauguration.

A five-member panel of the apex court led by Justice Mary Odili nullified the election of Mr Lyon on the grounds that his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, presented false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in aid of his qualification for the November 16 governorship election in State.

These are the names:

  • Current Name: Degi Eremienyo
  • Primary School certificate name: Degi Biobara
  • Secondary School certificate name: Adegi Biobarakumo
  • University Degree certificate name: Degi Biobarakuma
  • MBA certificate name: Degi Biobarakuma Wangaha

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP alleged in its case brought before Justice Inyang Ekwo that while Mr Degi-Eremienyo’s name was written as Degi Biobara in his primary school certificate, the documents from his secondary education bore Adegi Biobarakumo, as his name, while that of his university education had Degi Biobarakuma as his name.

Also, the PDP said the result from his MBA certificate had Degi Biobarakuma Wangaha as the name of the same person.

The court agreed with the PDP that the affidavits sworn to support the changes in the names were insufficient to validate the changes.

The court, therefore, decided that Mr Degi-Eremienyo did not fulfill the requirements for participation in the November 16 elections and thus disqualified him.
