U-20 World Cup: Flying Eagles face anxious wait after Brazil thrashing

Nigeria’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup were dashed after they suffered a 2-0 loss to Brazil in their final group game in La Plata on Saturday night.

The Flying Eagles needed a draw to secure their place in the last 16, but they were undone by two goals in quick succession from Jean Pedroso and Marquinhos in the first half.

Despite a spirited start that saw Jude Sunday hit the bar with a stunning volley, the Nigerians were unable to cope with the pace and skill of the Brazilians, who extended their unbeaten run against the West Africans to six games.

The second half was a one-sided affair, with Brazil dominating possession and creating several chances to increase their lead.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Chijioke Aniagboso, was kept busy throughout the game and made some fine saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Nigeria’s best chances fell to substitute Haliru Sarki, who twice rattled the woodwork in the closing stages, but it was too little too late for Ladan Bosso’s side, who finished third in the group on goal difference.

Brazil, Italy, and Nigeria ended with six points each but the Brazil and Italy had a better goal difference, and the Dominican Republic had zero points.

The Flying Eagles will have to wait until Sunday to find out if they will qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams or if they will return home early from the tournament.
