Two Siblings Crushed to Death by Collapsed Fence in Lagos

Two siblings, Rakib and Mujib Atolagbe, were killed on Saturday, July 22, after a fence from a neighboring building collapsed on their house in Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

The heavy downpour that occurred in the state caused the fence to give way, trapping the two siblings, aged 9 and 7, inside their home.

Rescue efforts by residents of the area were unsuccessful, and the bodies of the children were recovered after hours of being trapped in the debris.

The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-West, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday.

“The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Alao Street, Isawo, Ikorodu, Lagos State,” Farinloye said.

“The fence of a building collapsed on a house during a heavy downpour. Two children, aged 9 and 7, were trapped in the debris and later confirmed dead.”

Farinloye said that the agency’s disaster management team was deployed to the scene to assist with the rescue operation.

“The team worked with other emergency responders to clear the debris and recover the bodies of the deceased,” he said.

Farinloye said that the agency had advised residents of the area to be cautious during heavy rainfall and to avoid building structures close to fences or other structures that could collapse during strong winds or heavy rain.

He also urged residents to report any building that is in a state of disrepair to the appropriate authorities.
