President Bola Tinubu is set to receive the interim report of the Special Investigator, Jim Obazee, who was appointed to probe the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other related entities under the former governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The investigation, which began on July 28, 2023, has uncovered various irregularities and malpractices involving some leading banks’ Chief Executives and top business moguls, according to Newsflash Nigeria.
Some of the allegations include the misuse of the Anchor Borrowers programme, which was meant to support smallholder farmers, and the involvement in dollar round-tripping, which is a form of currency manipulation.
Newsflash Nigeria reported that some of the bank chiefs and industry players have been making desperate attempts to influence the outcome of the investigation by reaching out to top aides of the President in the Villa.
However, their efforts have been futile, as the President has refused to interfere with the work of the Special Investigator and his team. The President has reportedly told them to be ready to face the consequences of their actions if they are found culpable.
The sources also revealed that some of the bank chiefs and businessmen had followed the President to Paris, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Saudi Arabia when he visited, hoping to persuade him to drop the case against them.
The Special Investigator is expected to submit his report to the President soon, and it is likely that some of the bank chiefs and businessmen will be arraigned for prosecution.
