Tinubu to Appoint 20 Aides, Unveil Unity Cabinet with Five Ex-Governors

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to announce the appointments of 20 new aides, including Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, and Personal Assistants, as well as unveil his list of ministerial nominees that will feature five former governors.

A document obtained by The Guardian showed that President Tinubu has already selected the 20 aides who will serve in various capacities in his administration, and is only waiting for his formal approval before making them public. Some of the appointees have already assumed their duties unofficially.

The list of the proposed aides includes:

  • Adekunle Tinubu – Personal Physician
  • Tunde Rahman – Senior Special Assistant on Media
  • Damilotun Aderemi – Senior Special Assistant on Private Secretary
  • Ibrahim Masari – Senior Special Assistant on Political Matters

In addition, The Guardian learned that President Tinubu is set to send his list of ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation within the next few days. The list, which is said to be a ‘cabinet of (political) unity’, will comprise nominees from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and several technocrats.

President Tinubu’s gesture of reaching out to other parties has sparked controversies and intrigues in various political camps over the choice of suitable representatives in some key states, The Guardian reports.

However, there may be enough slots to accommodate the desired candidates. The Guardian gathered that the cabinet will be as large as that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, but with major changes in portfolios.

The President has less than 20 days left to submit his list of Ministers to the Senate for screening, as stipulated by the Constitution.

According to sources, the cabinet will consist of 42 Ministers and 20 Special Advisers. Each state is constitutionally entitled to have a representative in the cabinet, and each of the six geopolitical zones will also have members in the unity government.

Some of the notable differences from the previous administration include the likely scrapping of Ministers of State, and the inclusion of Special Advisers in the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings.

Also expected is the splitting of some large ministries into two or three to create more portfolios for cabinet members. Some of the ministries that may be affected include Works and Housing, Agriculture and Rural Development, Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, and Youths and Sports.
