Tinubu Hosts Fubara and Wike in Villa Amid Rift

President Bola Tinubu has invited the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and his former mentor, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, to the Presidential Villa for a National Police Council meeting.

The meeting, which is being held behind closed doors, also has several other state governors in attendance.

The invitation comes at a time when Fubara and Wike are locked in a bitter political feud that has divided the ruling party in Rivers State.

The two leaders have been at loggerheads since Fubara succeeded Wike as the governor in 2023, and have accused each other of corruption, incompetence, and betrayal.

It is unclear whether Tinubu intends to use the meeting as an opportunity to reconcile the warring factions, or to assert his authority as the leader of the party.

Some analysts have speculated that Tinubu may be eyeing a second term in office in 2027, and may need the support of both Fubara and Wike to secure his re-election.

Before the meeting commenced, some of the governors, including Wike and the NSA, Nuhu Ribadu, were seen having a side conversation, while others greeted each other warmly.

In a surprising gesture, Wike also extended his hand to Fubara and exchanged a few words with him, before joining the rest of the attendees.

The outcome of the meeting is yet to be announced, but many Nigerians are hoping that it will bring some peace and stability to the troubled Rivers State.
