England’s hopes of ending a 55-year crushed in heartbreaking as Italy win Euro 2020

Despite two saves by England goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, Italy have won their second European Championship trophy since 1968 after beating England in their Euro 2020 encounter at Wembley on Sunday.

Italy won 3-2 on penalties.

England’s three substitutes, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Bukayo Saka all missed penalties.

Needing to score to keep England alive in the shoot-out, Arsenal’s Busayo Saka spot-kick was saved by Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as the Azzurri won the tournament for the second time.

The game went into extra time in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes at Wembley.

Luke Shaw scored inside two minutes, the fastest ever goal in a European Championship final, but Leonardo Bonucci bundled in an equaliser at a corner midway through the second half.

England was attempting to win their first trophy since the 1966 World Cup, while Italy won their only European title in 1968.

In their first men’s final since 1966 and playing in front of a vocal crowd of around 60,000, England made the dream start when they scored in just the second minute, Luke Shaw volleying in superbly after a quick counter.

But Italy slowly started to gain control of the game and equalised midway through the second half when Leonardo Bonucci stabbed in from close range after a scramble from a corner.

England struggled to find their composure but managed to hold on to take the game to extra time and, after another nervous 30 minutes, penalties were needed to separate the two sides.
