Sunday Igboho Released After Two Years of Trial in Benin Republic

Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has finally regained his freedom after spending two years in detention and trial by the Beninese government.

Igboho was arrested on July 19, 2021, at the Cotonou airport while trying to flee to Germany with his wife, following a raid on his residence by the Nigerian security forces. He was accused of possessing illegal weapons and planning to destabilize Nigeria.

He was arraigned before a court in Benin on several charges, including illegal migration, forgery of documents, and criminal association. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges and maintained that he was fighting for the self-determination of the Yoruba people.

His trial was marred by several adjournments and delays, as his lawyers battled to secure his release and prevent his extradition to Nigeria. His supporters also staged protests and rallies in Nigeria and abroad, demanding his freedom and justice.

According to Tribune Online, Igboho was released from protective custody in Benin a few hours ago, after the court dismissed all the charges against him. He is now on his way to Germany to reunite with his family.

The Yoruba Nation leader, Prof. Banji Akintoye, confirmed Igboho’s release in a statement. He said he spoke with Igboho on the phone and congratulated him on his victory. He also thanked the Beninese government and people for their respect for human rights and the rule of law.

He said: “I am very happy to announce to all our Yoruba people at home and in the Diaspora that our esteemed leader, Chief Sunday Adeyemo (Igboho), has been released from detention in Benin Republic. I spoke with him on the phone a few minutes ago and he confirmed to me that he is free and on his way to Germany where he will join his family.”

He added: “I want to use this opportunity to thank all our Yoruba people and friends who stood by us throughout this ordeal. I also want to appreciate the Beninese government and people for their respect for human rights and the rule of law. I urge all our people to remain calm and peaceful as we continue our struggle for the liberation of our land.”
