Sunday Igboho Rejoins Family in Germany after Two Years of Ordeal in Benin

The Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, has finally reunited with his family in Germany after spending about two years under house arrest and detention in Benin Republic.

The embattled activist arrived in Hamburg, Germany, on Monday and met with his wife and children.

Igboho was arrested in Cotonou on July 19, 2021, while trying to flee to Germany following a raid on his residence by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria.

He was accused of stockpiling arms and inciting violence against the Nigerian government. He was also wanted for allegedly masterminding the attacks on Fulani herdsmen in Oyo State.

However, after a prolonged legal battle, Igboho was freed by the Court of Appeal in Cotonou on Sunday. He said he had fulfilled all the legal conditions for his bail and that he was free to return to Nigeria or visit any country of his choice.

He also expressed his gratitude to all those who had supported him during his ordeal and mentioned some prominent Yoruba leaders and monarchs who had stood by him.

“I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world. I fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to my bail a few years back, and I am coming home to Nigeria, my country of origin, any moment from now.

“I can confirm to you that I am now free to come back to Nigeria. There is no legal encumbrance again. Even though I have been living in Cotonou for some time, I can confirm to you categorically that I have now secured the liberty to leave Cotonou for Nigeria,” he told Nigerian Tribune.

He thanked Professor Banji Akintoye, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and Chief Ayo Adebanjo for their roles in securing his freedom.

He also appreciated the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao, Kabiesi Oba Tosin Oni Bariga of Bariga, Oba Tejuoso, Oni Kenta of Orile Kenta, Olugbo of Ugbo kingdom, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan Obateru, and other Yoruba monarchs for their support while he stayed in Cotonou.
