Stepmother and Son Arrested for Burying 11-Year-Old Alive in Kogi over N1,000

The police in Kogi have arrested a woman and her son for allegedly burying an 11-year-old boy alive in a bush at Silo community in Zango Daji, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi.

The boy, who is the stepson and stepbrother of the suspects, was rescued by passers-by on Wednesday after he had been buried by the 17-year-old son of the woman.

According to the police spokesman in Kogi, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the woman had accused the boy of stealing N1,000 from her and instructed her son to punish him before she left for church. The son then took the boy into the bush and buried him alive, leaving him to die.

Ovye-Aya said the woman was arrested on Thursday when she returned from church, while the son was arrested on Wednesday after the boy was rescued.

He said both suspects have made statements to the police and would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation.

He said the police were waiting for the father of the boy, who was said to have travelled, to give his statement. He added that the suspects would be arraigned as soon as the investigation is concluded.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Kogi, Hajiya Fatima Buba, also condemned the incident as “very wicked” and “saddening”. She said the ministry was in constant liaison with the police for the immediate prosecution of the mother and son.

She said the ministry had made arrangements to put the boy in an orphanage home, as he was regularly maltreated by his stepmother and stepbrother. She said the government would ensure that justice is served on all perpetrators of evil acts in Kogi.

She warned guardians who are fond of inhuman treatment of their wards to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
