School Principal, Vice Arrested for Beating Student to Death

A shocking case of corporal homicide has rocked the Al-Azhar School in Zaria, Kaduna State, where the Principal, the Vice Principal, and some prefects allegedly beat a student to death for skipping classes. The victim, Marwanu Nuhu Sambo, was a JSS 3 pupil at the Al-Azhar Academy.

According to Mansir Hassan, the Public Relations Officer for the Kaduna State Police Command, the police have arrested two suspects in relation to the incident and launched a full scale investigation.

He said the police were in control of the situation and would get to the root of the matter.

Sources revealed that Sambo was humiliated in front of the school’s assembly and given 105 strokes of the cane by the Principal.

He was then taken to the office and stripped of his clothes and trousers. He was further assaulted with sticks on his head, back, and body by the Principal and the Vice Principal.

The prefects also joined in the brutal attack until one of his teeth fell off and he lost consciousness.

Instead of taking him to the hospital, the prefects dumped his body near the male toilets and left him there until closing time. His lifeless body was discovered by other teachers who heard the cries of other students who witnessed the horrific scene.

“At the assembly, the principal ordered that Marwanu should be given 105 strokes of the cane. Thereafter, they took him to the office, removed his clothes and trousers and continued beating him with sticks on the head and back and his body.

“The Principal later handed him over to the school prefects who continued beating him with sticks until one of his teeth fell off. It was at that point that the deceased went into coma.

“But instead of rushing him to the hospital, the prefects brought him out and dumped his body in the school premises near the male toilets until closing time.

“Cries from other students in the school who watched in trepidation reportedly attracted other teachers who rushed to the scene where they found that the boy had given up the ghost.”

Sambo was taken to a private hospital in Zaria, but it was too late to save him. He was pronounced dead by the hospital.

The school’s management issued a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the incident and their condolences to the family of the deceased.

They said they had suspended and handed over the officers who inflicted the “irresponsible punishment” without consultation to the Nigerian Police Force for further action.

They also said they had closed the school for academic activities until further notice.

They prayed that Allah would forgive the deceased’s shortcoming, grant him jannat elfirdous as his final abode and give his family the strength to cope with the irreplaceable loss.
