Police Ask Seun Kuti’s Lawyers to Stop Media Trial

How the Police Responded to the Allegations of Seun Kuti’s Lawyers

The Nigeria Police Force has urged the lawyers of afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti, who is facing a charge of grievous assault on a police officer, to stop defending their client on social media and allow the judicial process to take its course.

In a statement issued by DCP Simon Lough, SAN, the head of chambers and lead prosecutor in the case, the police said that they had not paraded Kuti as alleged by his lawyers, but only took his photograph, fingerprints, name and address as required by law.

The statement also said that there was no law that prohibited the use of handcuffs to restrain a suspect who had shown a tendency of violence, as Kuti had allegedly attacked and slapped a police officer in uniform and threatened his wife.

The police assured the public that they would not engage in media trial of the case, but would conduct investigation in line with the law, professionalism and international best practices.

The statement appealed to Kuti’s defence team to desist from media trial/defence of their client and respect the rule of law and the rights and liberties of the citizens.
