Passengers Abducted By Gunmen On Benue-Enugu Expressway

Several passengers and motorists were abducted by gunmen on the Otukpo-Enugu expressway, along Olanyega/Ogbodo road in Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 pm on Sunday, causing panic among motorists plying that section of the expressway, which is a notorious spot for armed robbery attacks.

The gunmen emptied five vehicles, including a bus belonging to the state owned Benue Links, of their occupants and took them away to an unknown destination.

An eyewitness, Edumoga National President, Chief John Onoja, who narrowly escaped the incident, said that the gunmen were armed with sophisticated weapons and operated for about 30 minutes.

He said: “They blocked the road and stopped all the vehicles coming from both sides. They ordered everybody out of their vehicles and marched them into the bush. They were about 10 in number and they wore masks. They also collected our phones and money.”

He said that soldiers at a military checkpoint on the expressway trailed the assailants after the incident.

The Olanyega/Ogbodo spot on the Otukpo-Enugu expressway has over time become unsafe for commuters and passengers.

The spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, SP Catherine Anekwe, confirmed the incident, adding that it is being investigated.

She said: “We received a report of the abduction of some passengers by unknown gunmen on the Otukpo-Enugu expressway. We have deployed our men to the scene and we are working with other security agencies to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.”
