Mob Kills UI First-Class Graduate over Bread Theft
A tragic incident occurred in Bayelsa State on Sunday, when a mob lynched a first-class graduate of the University of Ibadan (UI), Opuofoni Freeborn Ebimotimi, for allegedly stealing bread.
Ebimotimi, who studied Business Administration at UI, was killed in the early hours of Sunday at Honeyhill Tombia, Bayelsa State.
According to Peoples’ 93.1FM in Yenagoa, Ebimotimi, who hailed from Korokorosei community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, had allegedly stolen some bread from a shop in the neighbourhood.
The shop owner raised an alarm, which attracted a crowd of angry youths who descended on Ebimotimi and beat him to death.
His younger sister, Idisemi Opuofoni Freeborn, said that neighbours and friends who witnessed the incident tried to intervene and pleaded with the mob to spare his life, promising to pay for the bread. However, the mob refused to listen and continued to assault him until he died.
Idisemi said that life had been hard for them since their father died, and that hunger drove her brother to steal bread.
She said: “We are seven in our family and life has been hard after our father died. I wrote WAEC since 2019 and have not been able to proceed to the university because of funds.”
The police have arrested some suspects in connection with the murder and are investigating the case. The police spokesperson, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident and said that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.
