Kaduna State Cuts Tertiary School Fees by 50%, 30% After Subsidy Removal

The Kaduna State Government has announced a significant reduction in the school fees for indigenes in higher institutions in the state. The decision was made to address the challenges of low enrolment and retention of students in the state-owned tertiary institutions.

According to Governor Uba Sani, who briefed the press on Monday on the “Review of current fees regime in Kaduna State tertiary institutions”, the existing fees were too high and had discouraged many students from pursuing or continuing their tertiary education. He said that some students had opted for alternative institutions that offered lower fees.

The governor said that his administration was committed to providing free and quality education for every child in Kaduna State from primary to secondary school, as well as expanding access to higher education. He said that the new fees model was competitive and affordable, and would also enhance the welfare of the students and teachers.

The governor revealed the new fees structure for the state-owned tertiary institutions as follows:

Institution Current Fee  Reduction (%) New Fee
Kaduna State University N150,000 30% N105,000
Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic N100,000 50% N50,000
College of Education, Gidan Waya N75,000 50% N37,500
Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology, Makarfi (HND Courses) N100,000  30% N70,000
Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology, Makarfi (ND Courses) N75,000 30% N52,000
Kaduna State College of Nursing N100,000 30% N70,000

The governor said that the downward review of the fees was also a palliative measure to cushion the effect of the rising cost of living in the country, especially after the removal of petroleum subsidy. He urged the students to take advantage of the opportunity and pursue their academic dreams with diligence and dedication.

The slashing of school fees is a welcome development for many students and parents. It will help to make education more accessible and affordable for everyone. The government’s commitment to providing quality education for all is commendable.

In addition to slashing school fees, the government is also taking other steps to improve education in the state. These include:

  • Expanding access to primary and secondary education
  • Improving teacher quality and training
  • Investing in school infrastructure
  • Providing scholarships and other financial assistance to students

The government’s efforts to improve education are essential for the future of Kaduna State. By investing in education, the government is investing in the future of its people.
