International Tax Fraud Scheme Exposed: Two Nigerians in the U.S. Face 20 Years in Prison

Two men living in the United States have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for their involvement in a transnational tax fraud scheme that stole millions of dollars from the IRS.

Adetunji Adejumo and Ibrahim Jinadu face up to 20 years in federal prison for their roles in the scheme. A third man, Olufemi Odedeyi, of London, United Kingdom, is awaiting extradition for his part in the crime. All three men were arrested in September 2021.

According to the plea agreements, the scheme involved international conspirators (including Odedeyi) who hacked into the computer servers of businesses in the United States and stole the personal information of U.S. residents. They then used that information to file false and fraudulent federal tax forms claiming income tax refunds from the IRS.

Adejumo and Jinadu, who resided in the United States, collected the fraud proceeds that were sent to prepaid debit cards or bank accounts that they controlled or accessed. They then transferred a portion of the money to other conspirators.

The scheme resulted in the filing of tax returns claiming millions of dollars in refunds that the conspirators were not entitled to.

The investigation was led by the IRS – Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) (Tampa Field Office) and the FBI (Tampa Division).

The IRS-CI Cyber Crimes Unit (Washington, DC), the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs, the IRS-CI and FBI International Operations at Mission UK, the United Kingdom’s National Extradition Unit, and IRS-CI Dallas and Atlanta Field Offices also provided substantial assistance.

The cases are being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rachel Jones.
