Teacher Brutally Attacked by Secondary School Students for Stopping One of Them from Cheating

A teacher in Ogun State, Nigeria, was brutally attacked by a group of ten students after he caught one of them cheating during an examination. The incident happened on Tuesday at Isanbi Comprehensive High School, Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area.

The teacher, Kolawole Shonuga, was invigilating the unified examination for the SS 1 Art class when he noticed that 18-year-old Ashimi Adebanjo was using a cheat sheet. He confiscated his paper and reported him to the school authorities.

However, the students were not happy with Shonuga’s action and decided to take revenge. They ambushed him at the school gate after school hours and beat him mercilessly. One of them, Kazeem Adelaja, allegedly hit him on the head with a stick while others punched and kicked him.

The police from the Remo Division intervened and arrested ten suspects. They were later arraigned in court for assault. The teacher also filed a formal complaint at the police station.

The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in the state condemned the attack and demanded that the students face the full wrath of the law.

The state chairman of the union, Felix Agbesanwa, said that no student should raise his hand against his teacher and that such acts of indiscipline must be deterred.

The state government also expressed its displeasure over the incident and warned that it would not tolerate any misconduct by learners in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said that the government had introduced a compulsory undertaking form for learners, parents and school heads to ensure a safe and peaceful learning environment.

This was not the first time that teachers in Ogun State were assaulted by students. In October 2021, at least four cases of such attacks were recorded in different public schools, prompting the government to take drastic measures to curb hooliganism.

The attack on Kolawole Shonuga is a disturbing incident. It is important to remember that teachers play a vital role in our society. They deserve to be respected and protected. If you see a teacher being assaulted, please report it to the authorities.
