Group writes Gov Fayemi over death traps on Ekiti major roads

Kayode Adamolekun Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has written a letter to the Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi over the death traps on major roads in the state.

The letter dated September 27 seen by Newsflash Nigeria and was signed by Kayode Adamolekun, was titled, “There are death traps on our roads that are in dire need of your attention”.

In the letter, the foundation called the attention of the Governor to the deplorable state of roads in Ekiti, asking for immediate attention and repair.

The letter partly read, “We are using this medium to call your attention to the deplorable state of major roads in Ekiti state.

“To mention a few, the road linking Osun state to Ekiti state, the road from Akure to Ado-Ekiti, and the roads that connect to Ikole- Ekiti, are nothing but death traps.

“These roads are currently not motorable, making it difficult for travellers to commute safely and in good time.

“Journeys are being completed within a longer time frame, at a pace that puts them at the mercy of kidnappers, should they choose to strike.

“We believe that putting the lives of citizens at risk is not a core value of this administration.

“A random visit should be paid to these roads, in order to feel the agony of the people and to see the dangers that they face while plying these routes.

“If the repair of these roads is not within your jurisdiction, we are trusting in your good heart and wise judgment, to speedily call the attention of the Federal government and relevant authorities to these dire issues and fast track a solution that brings peace and safety to the people.

“In the meantime, an urgent measure is required on these roads, to proffer solutions in the interim.”

Newsflash Nigeria gathered that travelling within or through Ekiti State on the Federal Government roads has continued to become a difficult task for the motorists and travellers following the level of the deplorable condition of many of the roads.

As a matter of fact, travelling on the affected roads, which ordinarily should not be more than one hour within the state is, now taking at least two or three hours for the travellers to reach their various destinations. This has been a great challenge for the stakeholders, especially the road users. As it is now, there seems to be no clear difference between the rural area roads and some major roads in the Ekiti State, particularly during the rainy season.

Some of the affected include the Akure- Ado Ekiti Road, Igede- Aramoko road, Ikole-Omuo road, Ikere-Igbara Odo road, Osun linking to Ekiti road, among others.

Unfortunately,  the bad condition of the roads has been aiding criminal activities as the bandits now utilise the expressways as a trap to kidnap the helpless travellers.

In the last few months, it has been reported that the criminal herdsmen operate on the roads almost on a daily basis to perpetrate their heinous activities. From the narratives of many of the victims of abduction, after being set free,  the bandits attacked their vehicles at the bad portions of the roads, when the vehicles moved at a very low speed.

It is also on the record that so many Nigerians have lost their lives as a result of road accidents that have occurred as a result of the impassable conditions of the affected roads.
