Government Revokes Certificates of All Private Schools

The Kano State Government has taken a drastic step to regulate the private education sector in the state by revoking the certificates of all private schools operating in the state.

The announcement was made on Saturday, August 12, during a meeting with the proprietors of private schools.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Private and Voluntary Institutions, Baba Abubakar Umar, said that the revocation was necessary to sanitize the private education sector and ensure that all private schools comply with the laws and regulations governing their operations.

He said that all private schools were required to fill out new registration forms and obtain new certificates from the government.

He also reminded the proprietors of their obligation to pay 10 per cent tax to the government as a way of contributing to the development of the sector.

He warned that any school that violates the operational standards set by the government, such as facilities, learning environment, curriculum, and academic calendar, would be shut down. He said that he had no intention of victimizing anyone, but rather enforcing discipline and quality in private education.

He also revealed that a new software had been developed to collect and manage comprehensive data on private and voluntary institutions in the state. The software would help to address the concerns and needs of the government, school proprietors, parents, and job seekers in private schools.

The Chairman of the National Association of Private School Owners, Kano Chapter, Muhammad Malam Adamu, commended the government’s initiative and described it as a fantastic and commendable move. He said that it would help to improve the performance and productivity of private schools in the state.

He also urged his fellow proprietors to cooperate with the government and abide by the rules and regulations for operating private schools. He said that this would benefit all stakeholders in the private education sector.

The revocation of private school certificates in Kano State has generated mixed reactions from the public. Some people have applauded the government for its bold action and its commitment to ensuring quality and accountability in private education. Others have criticized the government for being too harsh and unfair to private school owners who have invested their time and money in providing education services.
