FG Approves N25,000 Quarterly Allowance for Federal Doctors and Dentists

The Federal Government has granted a quarterly accoutrement allowance of N25,000 to medical and dental doctors working in federal hospitals, medical centres, and clinics.

This was announced in a letter issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on July 26, 2023.

The letter stated that the allowance was approved to enhance the welfare and performance of the doctors and dentists in the federal public service.

The allowance is to be paid from the overhead budget of the respective ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) where the doctors and dentists are employed. The letter also indicated that the allowance would take effect from June 1, 2023.

The President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr Uche Ojinmah, welcomed the approval of the allowance and expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for fulfilling one of the agreements they had reached.

He said that the NMA was looking forward to the full implementation of the other agreements, such as the payment of hazard allowance, residency training fund, and minimum wage adjustment.

The accoutrement allowance is one of the measures taken by the Federal Government to improve the health sector and address the challenges faced by health workers in Nigeria. The Federal Government hopes that the allowance will motivate the doctors and dentists to deliver quality health care services to Nigerians.

The approval is a welcome development for medical doctors and dentists, who have been demanding for a peculiar allowance for some time. The allowance is expected to help to offset the cost of uniforms, stethoscopes, and other essential items that medical doctors and dentists need to carry out their work.
