The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has refuted the allegations that his office received N2 billion to procure rechargeable fans, lights and fridges.
He also clarified that his wife’s monthly budget for outreach and empowerment programmes was N2.5 million each, not N30 million as reported by the state Public Procurement Agency (PPA).
Hamzat made these clarifications in a memo addressed to the Director General of the PPA, in response to a report by SaharaReporters that revealed some questionable contracts approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2023.
The report claimed that Sanwo-Olu approved N7.5 million to replace liquid fragrance in his office and N3 billion to purchase rechargeable fans for Hamzat’s office. It also alleged that over N440 million was spent to buy a new Lexus LX 600 Bulletproof SUV for the Chief of Staff’s office.
Hamzat, in the memo signed by the Director of Finance and Account, Tola Ekemode on behalf of the Permanent Secretary in his office, described the report as untrue, mischievous, fake and unfounded.
He said the actual amount approved and awarded for the supply of rechargeable fans, lights and fridges was N2,017,840 (Two Million, Seventeen Thousand, Eight Hundred and Forty Naira), not N2,017,840,000 (Two Billion, Seventeen Million, Eight Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira) as reported by the PPA.
He also explained that the amount stated for his wife’s outreach to indigents and empowerment programme covered the whole year, not per month. He said the monthly budget for each programme was N2,500,000 (Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira), not N30,000,000 (Thirty Million Naira) as reported by the PPA.
He urged the PPA to correct the errors and give the public a true account of what was approved. He said he would not allow some individuals and journalists with mischievous intentions to tarnish the reputation and integrity of the Deputy Governor, his wife and his office.
