Court remands man for destroying Ekiti LG election materials

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of one  37 year Awoyelu Rotimi (a.k.a Bingo) in the correctional centre over the alleged destroying election materials during the last Saturday local government election in the state.

Newsflash Nigeria had reported that the local government elections had conducted in Ekiti State last Saturday, December 4, in which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) cleared all the chairmanship seats of the 16 local governments and the 19 Local Council Development Areas.

The party also cleared 176 out of the 177 councilorship seats in the state where the councilorship election in Erinjiyan ward had been postponed due to alleged violence that broke out during the poll in the town.

Meanwhile, Chief Magistrate Saka Afunso of Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court, sitting in Ado Ekiti, has granted an order to remand Awoyelu Rotimi in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti.

Having listened to the Motion Ex-parte moved by the representative of the Attorney General, Mr Felix Awoniyi, Magistrate Afunso said ‘’ This Court found the application before it meritorious, the defendant is ordered to be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti pending the issuance of legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Awoyelu Rotimi was reasonably suspected to have committed offences of Malicious Damage and Terrorism, by snatching and setting ablaze boxes and papers during Local Government Election at Erijiyan Ekiti in Aramoko Ekiti Magisterial District on 4th December, 2021.

One of the victims who made a statement with Police said, the defendant led some group of thugs around 9:00 a.m to the Polling Booth and chased away all Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission Officers, Party

Agents and others destroyed all election materials and boxes before setting them ablaze.

According to the charge, the offences run contrary to and are punishable under Section 11(a) of the Kidnap and Terrorism (Prohibition) Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

The matter has been adjourned till 20th January 2022 for mention.
