Court jails 22-year-old man for stealing phone worth N35,000 at charging point in Ekiti

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 22-year-old man, Dele Awolusi, to one-month imprisonment for stealing a cell phone.

Chief Magistrate Titilayo Ola-Olorun, sentenced Mr Awolusi following his guilty plea and facts of the case.

Ms Ola-Olorun, however, gave the convict an option of an N10,000 fine.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, had told the court that the convict committed the crime on November 22 at about 10:00 a.m. at Orere Owu Area in Ado-Ekiti.

Mr Okunade said that the convict went to a place where people were charging their phones, entered the place and unplugged one of the phones, an Infinix Smart, valued at N35,000 belonging to Ayodele Akinyemi.

He said it was the complainant that apprehended him after he had stolen the phone and was taken to the police station.

According to him, the convict was a habitual criminal, who had stolen bags and a phone twice but got released at the police station after the stolen properties were recovered and given to the owner.

He added that the convict confessed to the crime while the phone was recovered from him.

Mr Okunade said the offence contravened Section 302 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.
