BREAKING: Tambuwal declares curfew in Sokoto as Muslim protests over arrest of Deborah’s killers

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has imposed a curfew in Sokoto metropolis over to curb further spread of violence amid a mob rampage for the release of Deborah Samuel’s murder suspects.

The governor said the directive was issued “in pursuance of peace and order in Sokoto metropolis and the entire state.”

NEWSFLASH NIGERIA had earlier reported that the Muslim youths in Sokoto trooped out in their numbers to protest against those accusing them of the killing of Deborah Samuel for alleged blasphemy.

Deborah, a 200-level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, was killed at about 9:00 a.m. on Thursday for allegedly criticising Prophet Muhammad.

Her killing has sparked nationwide outrage, with political and religious leaders demanding urgent arrest and prosecution of all suspects.

But in the early hours of Saturday, a mass protest against the arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the murder of a female student.

The youths trooped out and called on the state government as well as security agencies to as a matter of urgency release those arrested in connection with the killing.

Shouting “Allahu Akbar, God is great” while carrying different placards, the youths were all protesting in an orderly manner when our correspondent accosted them along Maiduguri road.

The movement started at the roundabout of Zabira mall where they march through Gao-Nama onwards to fly over within the metropolis.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions “Release(nd) our brothers,” “Muslims is not a terrorist,” in the presence of security officers.

The protest was organised by Isiyaku Malami, a Muslim devout who believes the murder suspects were protecting the integrity of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“Peace be upon you, we are calling on all Muslims in Sokoto State, for a protest because of our brothers that have been arrested in defending our religion -Islam. Those who are uplifting the honour of our prophet SAW,” reads the protest message shared by Mr Malami to Muslims in the state.
