Sanusi Returns to Nigeria for Abba Yusuf’s Inauguration as Kano Governor

The former Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has accepted an invitation from the governor-elect of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to attend his swearing-in ceremony on May 29, 2023.

Yusuf, who belongs to the NNPP party, defeated the candidate of the incumbent governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the APC in the March 18 election.

Sanusi, who is the 14th Fulani Emir of Kano, was dethroned by Ganduje in March 2020 and replaced by Aminu Ado Bayero, the son of the late Emir Ado Bayero.

Sanusi was accused of insubordination and disrespecting the authority of the governor. He was also banished to Nasarawa State, where he spent several months before moving to Lagos.

In his invitation letter to Sanusi, Yusuf expressed his belief that Sanusi’s presence would add colour and support to his inauguration.

He also stated his commitment to restoring the glory and reputation of Kano State by pursuing progress and development in all fields.

The letter reads: “As you are aware, the 2023 election into the office of the governor was conducted in Kano State on March 18, 2023, to which, by the Grace of Almighty Allah SWT, I emerged as the winner and subsequently issued a certificate of return by INEC. It is therefore my great pleasure to invite you to my swearing-in ceremony along with my deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

“It is my belief that your presence will not only significantly add colour to this important event, but also serve as a major boost and support to us, as we embark on a journey that aims at restoring the lost glory and reputation of our dear state by returning it to the path of progress and development in all fields of human endeveaour, In sha Allah.

‘’While anticipating your positive response and acceptance to grace the important event. Accept the assurance of my highest regards and consideration, please.”

Sanusi arrived in Nigeria on Saturday from London, where he had been living since he left Nasarawa State.

He landed at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos and was received by a delegation of NNPP officials and supporters.

Yusuf’s inauguration is expected to attract a large crowd of dignitaries and well-wishers from within and outside Kano State.

It is also seen as a symbolic gesture of reconciliation and respect for Sanusi, who is widely regarded as a reformist and a progressive leader.
