Biden’s Delegation Arrives in Nigeria for Tinubu’s Inauguration

A nine-member delegation from the United States, led by Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia L. Fudge, has arrived in Abuja to attend the inauguration of Nigeria’s president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria announced this in a tweet on Sunday evening.

Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State and a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the presidential election held on February 25, 2023. He defeated the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who has been contested since 1993, and former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi.

The U.S. delegation includes David Greene, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja; Sydney Kamlager-Dove, U.S. Representative from California; Marisa Lago, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade; General Michael E. Langley, Commander of U.S. Africa Command; Enoh T. Ebong, Director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency; Mary Catherine Phee, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs; Judd Devermont, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council; and Monde Muyangwa, Assistant Administrator for Africa at the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The U.S. delegation will join other dignitaries from around the world to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Tinubu on Monday, May 29, 2023.

Tinubu will be Nigeria’s sixth elected president since the return to democracy in 1999.

Tinubu is widely regarded as one of the most influential politicians in Nigeria. He is credited with transforming Lagos State into a modern megacity during his tenure as governor from 1999 to 2007. He also played a key role in the formation of the APC in 2013 and its subsequent victories in the 2015 and 2019 general elections.

Tinubu has promised to tackle the security and economic challenges facing Nigeria and to foster unity and development in the country.
