51 Passengers Escape Death as Plane Skids Off Runway in Lagos

A United Nigerian Airlines plane with 51 passengers and four crew members on board skidded off the runway at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Friday evening due to heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred at about 6:48 p.m. as the plane was trying to land at the local runway.

According to an anonymous source, the airfield was temporarily closed for safety reasons but reopened at 8:10 p.m. after the situation was under control.

The source said that all passengers were safely evacuated from the plane without any injuries or casualties.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter) and said that the airspace had been opened for operations.

NEMA also shared a picture of the affected plane with registration number 5NBWY, which showed some damage to its nose and landing gear.

The United Nigerian Airline is one of the domestic airlines operating in Nigeria. It was established in 2020 and has a fleet of six aircraft. The airline has not issued any official statement on the incident as of the time of writing this report.
