UNILORIN Student Dies by Suicide After Being Duped by Snapchat Friend N500,000

A tragic incident has claimed the life of Sanni Hameedat, a 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), who allegedly took her own life after falling victim to a scam by a friend she met on Snapchat, a social media app.

Hameedat, who was undergoing her Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) programme, had given N500,000 to the friend, who claimed that his mother needed urgent treatment for breast cancer. The friend had promised to pay back the money, but he blocked Hameedat after receiving it.

The money was part of the N1 million that Hameedat’s mother had entrusted to her for safekeeping. When her mother demanded the money back, Hameedat was unable to account for it. She then resorted to borrowing money from various loan apps, hoping to repay them later.

However, she soon found herself under pressure from the loan app agents, who harassed her for quick repayment. She also faced financial difficulties, as her brother was unable to help her out. These factors pushed her into depression and despair.

According to a statement by the UNILORIN management, Hameedat decided to end her life by ingesting a bottle of sniper, a pesticide, on the night of the incident. Her roommate, who had gone to bed early, woke up in the middle of the night and found her in distress, foaming from her mouth and vomiting.

The roommate raised an alarm and Hameedat was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where she was pronounced dead.

The UNILORIN management expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Hameedat, and urged students to be careful of who they interact with on social media platforms. It also advised students to seek professional help if they are facing any emotional or psychological challenges.
