Wole Olanipekun exposes Nigeria’s poverty nightmare: 70 per cent of citizens are rudderless
Nigeria is facing a serious challenge of poverty, as over 70 per cent of its citizens are living below the poverty line, according to a legal luminary, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN).
Olanipekun, who spoke in his hometown of Ikere Ekiti, during the 27th edition of the annual Wole Olanipekun Foundation’s scholarship award scheme and empowerment programme, said the situation was not only scary but also terrifying, as many Nigerians were rudderless and poverty-stricken.
Olanipekun, who is a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said the country was also grappling with other problems, such as tension, unrest, anxiety, pressure, confusion, hatred, anguish, pain, distress, and transferred aggression among the people.
He said the country was in need of urgent intervention and solutions to address the root causes of these problems.
Olanipekun also lamented the state of insecurity in the country, which he said had persisted for over a decade.
He said the insecurity had affected the lives and livelihoods of millions of Nigerians, as well as the economy and development of the nation. He called for a collective effort and responsibility to tackle the insecurity and restore peace and stability in the country.
