Wike Silent as Rivers Assembly Moves to Impeach Fubara
The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced an impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara over alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office. The assembly also witnessed a violent attack and a leadership crisis on Monday.
Newsflash Nigeria learned that 24 out of 32 lawmakers signed the impeachment notice against Fubara, accusing him of corruption, nepotism, and incompetence. The notice has been delivered to the governor.
Meanwhile, the assembly suspended the majority leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, and three other legislators for allegedly masterminding the arson attack on the House chamber. Ehie, who is a loyalist of Fubara, had opposed the impeachment move.
However, Ehie claimed to be the factional Speaker of the House and announced the suspension of the principal officers and the Chief Judge of the state, Simeon Amadi. He also declared the dissolution of all local government councils and the state executive council.
The former Governor of Rivers State and the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has not commented on the political turmoil in his home state. Wike is seen as a mentor and benefactor of Fubara.
