Why Wike Wants Atiku and Tambuwal Suspended from PDP
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called for the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike, who is also the immediate past governor of Rivers State, accused the duo of sabotaging the main opposition party with their actions.
Wike made this statement on Thursday on Channels Television’s evening programme “Politics Today”.
He said he was reacting to the tribunal verdict that upheld President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election. He commended the judges for being impartial and professional.
He said the presidential election was fair and reflected the will of the people, which he said could only be determined by the ballot box.
He blamed some PDP leaders, including Atiku and Tambuwal, for the party’s poor performance in the election. He said they failed to consider the mood of the nation and acted with arrogance, greed and impunity.
He said: “How would the PDP have won that election when it refused to consider the mood of the nation at that time? Look at the areas where PDP lost. It lost because of arrogance, greed and impunity.
“That is why I am calling on the National Working Committee of the party to suspend the presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; the former governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal, from the party so that they can rebuild the party.”
Wike dismissed some PDP members who were calling for his suspension, saying he had not done anything wrong against his party that would warrant his suspension.
He said he was standing for equity, justice and fairness. He said the party went against the will of Nigerians and Nigerians were superior to the party.
Wike also criticised Ovation Magazine publisher and columnist, Dele Momodu. He questioned his relevance and electoral value in PDP. He said he was from Edo State but did not win anything for the party in his state.
The minister said Nigerians expressed their electoral direction through this year’s general election, adding that the court has affirmed their verdict. He said he knew that the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would not win the election.
He said: “I am a realist. That is why we should praise the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The way the election went showed that it was a perfect election. I give it to INEC.
“In the past election, it was not possible for the likes of Obi to pull such numbers. Election is not about you as a person. You might be a good man, but the reality on the ground at that time was not favourable to you. Forget about sentiment. Yes, being a younger candidate, people might have preferred that. But the reality was different.”
