A young man, whose identity is unknown, was rescued by some good Samaritans from taking his own life in the Lekki area of Lagos State.
The incident, which was captured on video, was shared by a social media user, X user @victorhouston16 on Wednesday.
The video showed that the man tried to hang himself using a rope tied to a banner on a bridge. Fortunately, some bystanders intervened and prevented him from carrying out his suicide plan.
The video has gone viral on the internet, sparking reactions from many Nigerians who expressed concern over the rising cases of suicide in the country.
According to a 2019 World Health Organisation (WHO) report ‘‘Suicide in the World: Global Health Estimates’’, Nigeria has become one of the epicentres of suicide in the world, with a suicide estimate of 17.3 per 100,000.
This is higher than the global (10.5 per 100,000) and Africa (12.0 per 100,000) estimates.
The report also stated that suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds globally.
It urged countries to adopt effective strategies to prevent suicide and promote mental health among their populations.
