A lecturer at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Kadiri Akeem Babalola, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for raping a 20-year-old female student of the institution.
The student, whose name was withheld, alleged that Babalola s €xually assaulted her in his office when she went to discuss her results with him.
The incident, which occurred on August 16, 2023, was reported to the Inclusive Social Welfare and Empowerment Foundation, a non-governmental organization that advocates for the rights of women and girls. The NGO then forwarded the case to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, which launched an investigation into the matter.
The Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, ordered the arrest of Babalola after the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor failed to produce him within seven days as requested by the police. Babalola, who is an Associate Professor of Botany, confessed to the crime when he was interrogated by the Vice-Chancellor.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of Babalola on his X account. He said that the lecturer would be charged to court soon for rape and other related offences.
“He is to appear in court in the coming days,” Hundeyin stated.
