The Rift Between Wike and Fubara: What Wike Shared with PDP Governors

The governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have embarked on a peace mission to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to meet with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and persuade him to reconcile with his former protégé, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, was led by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed. He was accompanied by his colleagues from Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri and Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang.

According to a source who spoke to Punch, Wike expressed his grievances against Fubara, whom he accused of conniving with his political enemies to undermine his influence and legacy in Rivers State.

Wike said he worked hard to ensure Fubara succeeded him as governor, but now Fubara is empowering his rivals and dismantling his political structure.

The source said, “Wike told the governors how he struggled to ensure Fubara succeeded him, but now, the Rivers State governor is empowering his political enemies and distorting his political structure to bring him down.

“ President Tinubu made some recommendations to Governor Fubara and Wike for peace to reign. So, the governors agreed to wait for the result and also plan to have a similar meeting with the Rivers State governor.”

The meeting was part of the efforts by the PDP governors to resolve the crisis between Wike and Fubara, who have been at loggerheads since Fubara assumed office in May 2023. The rift has threatened the unity and stability of the PDP in Rivers State and the South-South region.
