The Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs has reaffirmed its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite the recent outburst of former President Olusegun Obasanjo against some of its members.
The council said it had no regrets in backing Tinubu in the 2023 general elections and would do so again in the future.
The council made this declaration on Tuesday through a statement issued by its Deputy Chairman, the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao.
The statement was in response to the incident that occurred on Friday at the inauguration of the Iseyin Campus of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), where Obasanjo publicly rebuked some traditional rulers for supporting Tinubu against his preferred candidate, Mr Peter Obi.
The statement said that the incident was an internal affair that would be properly reviewed at the next meeting of the council. It also said that the traditional rulers involved understood the pain caused by the incident and appreciated the reactions of the public.
The statement further said that the traditional rulers in Oyo State had no regrets in supporting Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde in the last election and would be willing to support them even in the future. It said that this was the clear position of monarchs in Oyo State and any other information contrary to this should be disregarded.
The statement read: “The outburst of former president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo against traditional rulers in attendance at the inauguration of the Iseyin Campus of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) on Friday, September 15, has generated anger and varied responses from true sons and daughters of Oduduwa in all sections of society.
“All the royal fathers involved understand the pain caused by the incident and appreciate the well-placed reactions. I wish to state that the incident is an internal affair that will be properly reviewed at the next meeting of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.
“Let it, however, be well noted that traditional rulers in Oyo State have no regrets in supporting Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde in the last election and will be willing to support them even in the future.
“This is the clear position of monarchs in Oyo State. Any other information from anywhere that is contrary to this should be disregarded.”
