No Wage Award or Palliatives for Workers on Independence Day, FG Clarifies

The Federal Government has debunked the report that President Bola Tinubu would announce a wage award to workers on Independence Day.

The report, which was published by a newspaper, claimed that the President would also unveil some palliatives for the workers as part of the celebration.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, issued a statement on Wednesday to refute the report.

He said that the report was a fabrication by the reporter to suit the agenda of some vested interests. He urged the public to disregard the report as it had no basis in reality.

“The Ministry of Labour and Employment wishes to inform the public that the report circulating online that the President will announce wage awards and palliatives to workers during his October 1st Independence Day speech is false and misleading.

“The report, which was attributed to a purported interview with the Director of Information in the ministry, alleged that a last-minute meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday between the Federal Government and Labour to avert the proposed strike.

“We want to state categorically that the Director of Information never made such disclosure at any time,” he said.

He added that, for clarity, it is important to emphasize that the Director of Information at the ministry does not speak for the President.
