Nigerians have criticized Dangote Refinery for withholding information on its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pricing, months after beginning fuel distribution.
On Saturday, Dangote Group responded on its official X account, denying claims from petroleum marketers that the refinery’s PMS price ranged between N1,115 and N1,028 per liter. These claims were initially made by Yakubu Suleiman, National Assistant Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, during an interview with Arise Television on Friday, where he stated that Dangote’s petrol price was higher than alternative sources.
Despite Dangote’s dismissal of these claims as “fake news,” Nigerians have demanded greater transparency regarding the refinery’s fuel pricing structure. Social media reactions on X reflected growing frustration, with users urging Dangote Refinery to disclose its prices openly instead of operating in secrecy.
@Olurunwababs commented, “It’s laughable to dismiss a claim as fake, then refuse to disclose the actual fuel price from Dangote Refinery! Transparency is needed.”
@Abdul_A_Bello added, “Just tell us how much you’re selling from your depot.”
@Abbaaudu echoed similar sentiments: “Dangote’s reluctance to disclose his petroleum prices raises questions. If the refinery produces at a lower cost, why not announce prices to attract local buyers and reduce imports? The secrecy only fuels speculation about potential market dominance or hidden factors. Just tell us the price!”
Following Dangote’s initial fuel shipment on September 15, 2024, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited stated it purchased fuel from the refinery at N898 per liter. Dangote, however, disputed this figure but declined to reveal the actual price.
Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to face fuel prices between N1,025 and N1,300 per liter nationwide amid persistent price hikes in recent months.
