Some MTN Nigeria subscribers got a pleasant surprise on Saturday when they checked their accounts and found out that the airtime they had borrowed from the network provider had been wiped out.
The unexpected development was caused by a technical glitch in MTN Nigeria’s system that affected the balance enquiries of some customers. The glitch made it appear as if the customers had no outstanding debt, leaving their balances at zero.
MTN Nigeria acknowledged the issue in a statement sent to Newsflash Nigeria on Saturday. The company explained that the glitch was not intentional and that the customers’ balances would be restored to their correct figures as soon as the problem was fixed.
“MTN Nigeria Communications Plc can confirm a system glitch impacting balance enquiries. As a result, some customers may receive error messages showing that their balances have been cleared,” the statement read.
“This is not the case and all balances will reflect accurate figures once the problem is resolved. Our engineers are currently working to ensure this. Please accept our apologies. We regret the inconvenience.”
However, some customers took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their joy and gratitude over the glitch. They believed that MTN Nigeria had forgiven their debts as a gesture of goodwill.
Some of the reactions are shown below:
- “Thank you MTN for clearing my debt. You are the best network in Nigeria. God bless you.”
- “Wow, I just checked my balance and MTN has removed the 500 naira I borrowed. This is a miracle. Thank you MTN.”
- “MTN has done it again. They have cleared all my borrowed airtime. I’m so happy. MTN, you are too much.”
